Modern Courtyard -
Mullholland Drive, California Residence
The low slung horizontal house sits on a hillside just off of Mulholland
Drive. The house is a typical 1960’s, Californian architectural,
post and beam. However, the front outdoor entryway had been renovated
in the 1980’s in a traditional style with brick and conflicted
with house's architectural aesthetic. The client also wanted to incorporate
an underused area at the front of the house adjacent to his home office
.
We began with a new driveway, garage door, and a concrete pad and
step. A long acrylic and redwood fence was built to enclose the area.
The panels on the fence were designed to echo the proportions of the
house and the interior space of the courtyard became a long rectangle
of light and shadow. The light comes from above, dappled through the
trees and through the translucent acrylic panels on the sides of the
new fence. We designed a simple fountain to draw the eye along the
length of the courtyard and absorb traffic noise.
