5 Reasons Pilates Should Be Your Number One Workout

So many people have been swearing by pilates and all the benefits this form of exercise promotes. It's no secret that Pilates is extremely popular all around and there are various reasons why. Pilates is a form of exercise with low impact that relaxes the body in a harmonious way and allows it to absorb all the benefits with each and every move. We have gathered a list of the top 5 reasons why Pilates is such a beneficial exercise and we want to share them with you.

1. Strengthens the core and improves posture

For starters, while pilates engages the entire body, the main region of the body being targeted is the core, which includes the back muscles, the abdomen, and pelvic floor. As you strengthen your core in this exercise overtime, you will eventually see a drastic improvement in your balance and posture and your performance in other areas of fitness such as running. Besides these benefits, doing pilates can help you prevent future body injuries as well as relieve any concurrent ones. Good posture is important to maintain in order to avert back issues, and when you strengthen your core the muscles in your back are strengthened as well, causing you to have better posture, stand taller, and look naturally slimmer.

2. Decreases stress and boosts energy levels

Each form of exercise comes with different breathing and focusing techniques. Pilates requires slow breathing which helps the body to relax and enter a stress free zone. When your mind and body are relaxed and in harmony, you can absorb all the benefits from the workout, such as the healthy flow of oxygen throughout your body, triggering your brain to stay calm and relax.

3. Helps the body recover from injuries

Many back problems are the result of weak back muscles. By practicing pilates and targeting the core, the back muscles are strengthened which can help the body recover from injuries as well as prevent them.

4. Complete Body Exercise

Unlike many forms of exercise, pilates targets all areas of the body without neglecting others. In pilates, you use your body weight for resistance, working both small and large muscle groups. Many people think that the workout only targets the core and trunk, however the workout targets your entire core including the back, your arms, legs, buttocks, and even the mind.

5. Tones muscles and improves flexibility

By doing pilates regularly, your body will transform entirely, toning and elongating the appearance of your muscles to give you a long and lean look without adding bulk. With a variety of stretches that target different areas of the body slowly but surely, your flexibility will improve with every workout and only get better.

I didn’t know that pilates could help with boosting your energy and enter a stress-free zone through breathing techniques. My roommates and I have all been a little extra stressed lately since midterms are almost here. I think we should find a group pilates class to help us get some needed relaxation before our exams.

My younger sister has been interested in getting her body back into the physical conditions it was in back when she was on the dance team in high school. It was beneficial when you mentioned in your article that it is important to remember that pilates work to exercise your entire body whilst not neglecting any of the other ones. I’ll be sure to look further into pilates to see if it would be a good fit! http://www.livingproofnyc.com/pilates/
